Army Sergeant Dismissed Due To Sexual Orientation

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- A decorated sergeant and Arabic language specialist was dismissed from the U.S. Army under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, though he says he never told his superiors he was gay and his accuser was never identified.

Bleu Copas, 30, told The Associated Press he is gay, but said he was "outed" by a stream of anonymous e-mails to his superiors in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.

"I knew the policy going in," Copas said in an interview on the campus of East Tennessee State University, where he is pursuing a master's degree in counseling and working as a student adviser. "I knew it was going to be difficult."

You may already have guessed how I feel about this. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is a senseless policy that discriminates against American citizens who want to proudly serve their country. Copas' case is an even more glaring example of how this nonsensical policy hurts the US military, given the demand for soldiers who speak and read Arabic in the post-9/11 world. The shortage of soldiers with these skills is acute enough - why would the Unites States Military purposefully sack a valuable asset like Copas over a silly little thing like his sexual orientation?

As far as I'm concerned, "Don't ask, Don't Tell" is the US Army's way of childishly putting its hands over its ears and yelling "La La La, I can't HEAR YOU!" Let's face it: 'Ignore it and it will go away' has never been a sound policy to follow - just ask Paul Martin.

This antiquated policy is absurd. The presumption that a soldier is somehow suddenly less qualified to perform his duties after he has been "outed" reeks of, well, stupidity. Don't tell the Joint Chiefs of Staff that, however. Those gays you know, they aren't real tough men like us, right? HUAH!

Give me a break. If someone is willing to put their life on the line for me I don't give two beans about their sexual orientation.

Besides, if I was in the midst of a war zone getting shot at, I can guarantee you the last thing on my mind would be "Hey, is Pfc. Johnson looking at my ass?"

Yeesh.

H/T to Drudge.
