Eve of a General War

Things are indeed looking grim right now in the middle east. When state leaders start throwing around the "W" word, I get a little bit jumpy.

Let's get this out in the open now: a general war in the middle east is not a good thing. Never will be. If you happen to be one of those people saying, "bring it on, Israel should finish these jerks off once and for all!" I've got news for you - you're wrong, wrong, wrong. Wrong. Does anyone think for a second that the current situation in the middle east will change if Israel wins another war with its neighbors? If Israel occupies its enemies it most certainly faces an insurgency that will make Iraq look like a game of hide and seek. If it withdraws after occupying enemy territory, what will it have gained from going to war except an increasingly vengeful Hezbollah?

Furthermore, what if the tide begins to turn against Israel? As in the 1973 October War, the United States will have no choice but to intervene and provide Israel with either/or hardware or military personnel, although with the US tied down in Iraq right now, Israel may very well be on its own.

Israel is a tough little nation, but she's a little nation nonetheless.

Let's hope calmer heads prevail.
