Farewell, President Bush

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful."

2, Timothy 4:7

President Bush, thank you for eight years of service. In the face of often outrageous and unfair displays of criticism from political opponents, media elites, and hate-filled protestors, you have endured and led the freest nation through its toughest years since the Cold War. Through it all, you refused to put what was popular over what was right.

Through the dark days following September 11th you gave a nation the courage to rise up and endure. You led American forces to crush the theocratic regime of the Taliban and root out the terrorists who murdered over three thousand people on that day.

In 2003, you led American forces in a quest to bring democracy to Iraq and to make both it and the world safe from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein. In the darkest days of the war when all believed victory to be hopelessly out of reach, you believed in the tenacity of the American soldier and the American people and went ahead with the Surge when all, including the current president, doubted you and said that it would only lead to an even worse defeat. You stood and endured it all - and you proved them wrong.

Thank you for enduring what almost no one else could. You went on with your work in spite of all the mocking self-righteousness of a biased mainstream media. At times, the actions they took in spite of your warnings served to help the enemies of the free world.  The overwhelming hatred directed your way by so many seems to me an impossible burden to bear, and yet you took it stoically and continued on, day after day, with your job. And you succeeded.

In the 2,688 days since September the 11th, 2001, not one terrorist attack against the United States has occurred. You kept your promise, and your resolve.

And for that, I thank you, and I salute you.
